Dries Van Noten Spring/Summer 2014 was one to force any critic into making some sort of allusion to gold - the midas touch, the goose that laid the golden egg, or even all that glitters is gold. The decorative vestments made the audience awe over the clothing lacquered with this precious metal. You could even call the designer Rumplestilskin, spinning straw straw into gold; turning raw cotton into something more lavish and lustful. (x)
My favorite thing about DVN is his ability to surprise in the most subtle way. Delicate drops of gold were sprinkled on the eyelashes of the models and glazed over the models’ parts in their hair. His ability to sculpt ruffles and flower appliqués on to his creations, giving them a 3-D aspect, emphasizes his genius of fashion and design. Golden pleats were amplified by the giant backdrop made from wood covered with golden foil. The grungy bass of Radiohead’s own Colin Greenwood vibrated the whole building.
Although everything was illuminated in gold, no DVN collection would be complete without some oriental patterns and perfectly embroidered kimono inspired jackets. Not to mention, I admire his ability to transform something as tacky as braided cowrie shells into some of the best pairs of shoes I’ve seen strut down this season’s runway. Although this Spring/Summer pallet consisted of mostly beiges, whites, and golds; rushes of red and waves of black showed the omnipotence of the Belgian designer. And what would a DVN review be without a mention of his iconic prints? Melodramatic flower prints, tiger prints, and quilted tribal patterns made the ambiance of the collection the laid-back ultra-chicness that every Dries Van Noten girl dreams of. Attention fashionistas! You better act fast because this collection will sell out like gold dust.
